MY DAUGHTER HAS TINNITUS (WHAT TO DO AS A PARENT)

Sharing is caring!

That bloody boncert

My name: David.

Profession: Senior Business Development, industrial sector.

Number of children: 2 – my daughter is 28 years old and my son 25.

They are University students with an excellent academic record. Optimal social and work situation, by the book. Until almost two years ago…

It was April 2016, as part of the spring celebrations of our city, when my daughter went to the U2 concert, Bono in pure form, and his drummer Larry Mullen Jr., more inspired than ever.

But my daughter was too close to the speakers

The next day she woke up with a buzzing in her right ear, and she said it was an unbearable sensation.

I took her to the family doctor. Whenever I can, I accompany my children to any emergency situation that occurs.

The diagnosis: Bipolar Auditory Trauma. The treatment: vitamin supplements based on B12, magnesium, iron, and zinc.

It was what is called Tinnitus. But after three weeks the buzzing continued and my daughter said she could not take it anymore and it has now spread to the other ear.

The doctor suggested consulting a maxillofacial specialist, as it could be due to bad jaw occlusion, but no problem was found.

Learning to deal with your tinnitus

I started to get used to my daughter’s problem. Tinnitus can influence the daily life of the sufferer, producing anxiety, stress and frustration, and my daughter was starting to display all these symptoms.

And on top of it, there were the nights, oh the nights! During the first few weeks, my daughter could not sleep at all, and in addition to being depressed, she felt totally exhausted.

Testing various therapies

What we have heard most is that, unfortunately, there is no cure or treatment for her tinnitus.

So, we have tried several therapies to try and help my daughter.

We tried group therapy, which consists of meeting with other people who also suffer from tinnitus. The experiences of other people can be very useful to see how they are fighting their tinnitus.

We have also tried Gingko biloba, a medicinal plant that improves blood flow, so if the buzzing is due to circulatory problems, this treatment could be helpful.

But what had the best result for my daughter is the so-called white noise. They are sounds that you would play at night and help you mask the buzzing in your ears, so you can fall asleep and rest.

The white noise resembles the sound of rain, wind, a river, the sea, crickets or a fountain. The ringing in the ears does not disappear, but you manage to relieve them during the night so you are able to sleep.

Learning to understand our children

The most important thing I have learned in these two years with my daughter since she started suffering from tinnitus is to be patient and learn to understand how this is affecting her. Those who do not hear constant ringing or buzzing tend to think that the condition is not so bad, but sufferers can have a really hard time with it.

I would encourage all people suffering from tinnitus (and their parents) to not be discouraged. Tinnitus can stop being so invasive if it’s relativised, and if therapy that works for the person is sought as soon as possible.

My daughter nowadays can sleep and live her life with total normality and she barely pays attention to the buzzing. The important thing is to be with our children, to listen to them and to make them feel that we understand what they are going through.

Best of luck!
